Commanders Corner – Commander Dave Johnson

My Fellow Comrades -

As my term as Post commander winds down, I would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

I would like to stress the importance of getting as many members involved in our post to keep it not only going but growing.  We have one of the best and most recognizable posts in the area and it takes a lot of effort to keep it going. More involvement by everyone will keep this post one of the strongest in New York.

I would encourage all of the membership to attend the monthly meetings so you can see how your post is managed.  This would also help the officers to better serve you with your input as to what you would like to see done.

The March and April meetings are critical in electing the new officers to carry out your concerns.  I would also encourage everyone to bring in as many new members as possible as there is more power in numbers.

Again I would like to thank everyone for their help and co-operation throughout the past year.

Dave Johnson-Commander

POV News- Jim Schenkel, President

I am extending a special invitation to all members to come in and re-visit “Your Post Home” and see some of the improvements that have been done in the last couple of years.  Your board of directors has worked hard to make this a facility that you can be proud of and that you will feel comfortable bringing a guest to. I like to think of it as “Our Private Country Club” for Veterans and their families.  Also remember to take advantage of the meeting hall and banquet facilities, as well as the picnic pavilion and grounds.  They are available to members at a reduced rate. It is a great facility for a family picnic, wedding reception, graduation party or other special occasion you might be planning in the future.

Honor Guard – Frank Balik, President

Another year has gone by and the Honor Guard has out done itself by accumulating 1032 M/H during 2007, that’s 100 hours more than 2006 when we accumulated 928 M/H.  “Thank you to all of you who have given of yourselves for this worthy effort.

The following is a summation of the 2007 activities:

Rendered Military honors at 25 services but had to decline on four occasions.

Marched in two Parades, Memorial Day and Independence Day

Conducted flag ceremonies at the opening of Little League, demonstrated proper flag etiquette to the Cub Scouts, Post/Retire colors for the National Guard Home Coming, County VFW Awards Dinner, Anniversary Dinner and we also presented colors at the Legends Ball.

Also, performed at the POW/MIA ceremonies at Ontario Beach, Veterans Day and rendered honors at the dedication of the KIA Memorial on Freedom Hill.

Members of the Honor Guard attended our annual Appreciation Dinner which was held on Monday, 14 January 2008 at Napa Ginos which is located in Penfield.  All who attended enjoyed an evening of dinning and dancing.  Awards were also presented to the following individuals:

Allevato, R. -    Highest level of Attendance                    Cronkite, R - . 2nd Highest Level

Bergen, R. & Durham, J - Tied for 3rd Highest Level      Gunio, C. - Certificate of Appreciation upon his retirement

The Honor Guard had to bid a fond farewell to 1st Sgt. Andrew Mendes U.S.A Retired and CWO John Dreste U.S.A. Retired who left our ranks to report to the Supreme Commander in Chief.

Make sure the “gig line” is straight when standing role call.

Once again I would like to thank each and every member of the Honor Guard for your help and cooperation during the past year and I hope for the same in the coming months.

Senior vice Commander - Rick Gough

Well comrades, it won’t be long and we’ll be kicking off our 2008 Buddy Poppy Campaign. Tradition has it that we distribute our poppies in May to coincide with the Memorial Day Holiday. As you are aware, the proceeds from this campaign are put in our post relief fund to aid and honor local veterans and their families.

Last year’s successful campaign resulted in just over $12,000 being added to our relief fund. This year we would like to shoot for $13,000, an achievable goal if we have everyone’s help and support. Please plan to attend our April 10th post meeting to learn how you can be part of this year’s campaign. Some of our more successful campaign participants will be on hand for demonstrations and will help you get started if you are new to this program. With every member contributing a few hours time to this campaign, we will meet and exceed out goal.  Please join usJ

Also check our web site and go to the Post Exchange to buy Freedom Hill Merchandise.

Care Packages The post continues to send packages to our members (including families and friends of members) overseas.  In January we were able to send over 35 packages to seven personal on our list and to Jim Peterson’s entire outfit.
